Most have forgotten that during the peak of 20th Century American forestry, the double bit axe was the tool of choice for the professional axeman. Well-balanced and versatile, they are essentially two axes in one. You could get twice the mileage out of each axe, and they were a breeze for edge maintenance in the field. Just lodge one bit into a stump and file the other.
Whereas the full-sized double bits would weigh 3.5 to 6lbs on a 32-36in handle, "Cruisers" traditionally weighed only 2.5lbs on a shorter handle. According to lore, Timber Cruisers were the scouts of the timber harvesting operation and went on ahead to mark the trees to be felled. Travelling fast and light was the goal, so they preferred these special double bits for the job.
